Fall has arrived at 50 East Garden Center & Cafe! Josiah White’s residential students in our Growing Teens for Life vocational training program are involved in preparations for this season from growing the mums to perfecting the seasonal drink menu. Read on to learn more about our seasonal offerings and how the students contribute to each one!
Pumpkins and Mums
The students working in the greenhouse are involved from start to finish of our fall growing season. Students begin by helping prepare all the nursery pots for planting prior to the mums being delivered. When the mums arrive, the students plant the mum plugs into nursery pots. Students water, fertilize and do quality checks on mums as they grow. When the mums are ready to sell, students help with the set up of displays and create pre-made fall containers for our customers. Students are also always around to help with any customer needs.
By completing these various tasks, the students are working towards certifications that will give them a leg up when applying to jobs after leaving Josiah White’s. The students also earn voucher money that is made available to them upon graduation to help provide stability as they transition back into their community.
Recently, we celebrated the accomplishments of two students completing all the vouchers 50 East offers. The students who finished every voucher now have certificates in OSHA, ServSafe, Barista, Customer Service, Workplace Essential Skills Training, SixSigma White Belt, Project Management, Greenhouse, and Aeroponics Towers. These students will also receive a total of $1,175 in voucher money when they graduate from their programs.
We are hopeful these students’ success will inspire and motivate others to get the most out of the program that they can!
Fall Drinks
In addition to their work in the greenhouse, students are also involved in creating new drinks and food items for the cafe. Since the students serve our customers every day, they hear all the customer feedback and keep that in mind as they come up with new drink recipes.
Be sure to check out our fall drinks this season!

Students can also be found in action in our garden center, stocking seasonal items and creating product displays. Every single customer who walks in the door is giving our students an opportunity to learn something new, so be sure to check out the rest of what we have in our store this season!
