Josiah White’s has recently started offering our residential students the opportunity to participate in athletic programming through both boys’ basketball and co-ed volleyball teams.
Throughout this winter season, 34 students participated in boys’ basketball and 42 students participated in volleyball. After discovering a lack of volleyball leagues in the local community, Recreation Coordinator Joshua Smith invited staff to create co-ed volleyball teams to compete against the students. Since then, 45 staff members from across several departments have participated in the Staff/Student Volleyball Tournament.
“Athletics programming provides a positive outlet for many of the stressors our students can experience during placement and provides them with motivation to model positive behavior and make progress in their treatment plans,” said Joshua Smith, Recreation Coordinator. “Most importantly, our student athletes are learning how to have fun in a way that’s constructive!”
The Josiah White’s boys’ basketball team played a total of 12 games, and they won their first away game versus Emmanuel Christian Schools with a score of 36-37.
“The growth I’ve seen in our student athletes is what motivates me to continue in the relentless pursuit of providing bigger and better opportunities for our students,” said Smith. “They have begun encouraging one another and demonstrating empathy towards struggling teammates. As a result of their commitment to themselves, their team, and their coaches, members of the Men’s Basketball team and Volleyball Club have experienced growth in many aspects of their lives throughout the season and experienced the joy of victory at many points.”
