Summer is the perfect time for parents and kids to play, bond, and create memories together, echoing Josiah White’s mission to foster strong, healthy relationships and improve the well-being of children and families. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund, “Children who play regularly with their parents are less likely to develop anxiety, depression, aggression and sleep problems.” So, what better time than now to engage in activities that can enhance your child’s mental health and strengthen your family bond? Here are some simple, meaningful activities that our students are enjoying to help you get started:
Here are some simple, meaningful ways to get you started:
Outdoor Adventures
Even simple activities like taking walks in nature or around the neighborhood encourage kids to explore, enjoy the fresh air, and engage with the world around them. These outings help reduce stress and improve mood.
Staying Active
Exercise is important for both physical and mental health. It helps the brain to release endorphins, the “feel-good” hormone that reduces stress and promotes relaxation. Sports like playing pickleball and dancing are great for kids to spend their energy.
Movie Time
Sometimes, the best way to unwind is with a good movie. Having a movie night gives your family a relaxing break from mundane routines and is a simple yet memorable way to spend quality time with your child.
Card & Board Games
A round of card and board games stimulates the brain, keeping sharp and engaged. The focus required during play promotes mindfulness, helping to calm the mind and improve concentration. It also teaches children to learn to cope with winning and losing helps build resilience and patience.
Community Projects
Getting your child involved in projects that make an impact gives them a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Take, for instance, the Finnley Project, where our students learned to knit hats and gloves to support grieving families. Engaging in such services cultivates empathy, compassion, and essential life skills like teamwork and leadership.
These activities don’t have to be extravagant. Simple actions like taking a walk or reading a book can make a big difference in your relationship with your child. This summer, take the time to connect with your child and create lasting memories. In doing so, you exemplify Josiah White’s mission, nurturing strong, healthy family bonds.
